Connect MD to the PC via USB. A 'found new hardware' message should pop up right away. After this MD should be visible in the hardware manager. In XP it will probably show up as 'USB Audio Device'.

Connect a piezo element to some of MD's inputs. Run any MIDI host you want to use MD with. In it, select 'USB Audio Device' as MIDI input. Gently knock on the piezo element. The MIDI host should report input MIDI activity (how — depends on the host). You might want to use MCT (MegaDrum Configuration Tool) for this.

MidiOx is a great way to test your module. And it's free. No sounds with it though.

If you don't have any piezo for input, try to send your configuration over midi (sysex messages) and then try to send it back...
