2.5 board polarity

i was wondering what do the square pads indicate on the 2.5 board, polarity? if it is polarity what about the capacitors without a square pad?

I believe they just indicate which pin is pin 1. That's on the IC's at least; on other things, it might show the direction of the positive lead. The capacitors that don't have it probably don't need to be installed a certain way.
