I'm trying to track down a problem while programming my PIC. When I plug in the USB cable to give the PIC power, the PIC gets extremely hot-hot enough to burn my finger after it has had power for several seconds. Is this normal?

ok-definitely not normal-the other board I am working on is not displaying that problem-sounds like I have a short somewhere there.

Make sure the polarity isn't reversed.

I had all sorts of problems...I had wired the usb connector wrong-the D- and Ground were flipped, and there was also a short from +5 to ground. got those sorted, and the chip wasn't overheating-hopefully I didn't ruin it...
