How to determine DynLevel and DynTime settings

Postby dschrammie » Tue Jan 18, 2011 11:09 pm

Dmitri -
In this thread viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1456&start=0 you provided a step by step procedure for determining appropriate high and low levels for the hihat pedal. I found this step by step procedure quite helpful for getting my pedal set up. It seems like this is the type of procedure that should be part of the documentation.

Anyhow, I was wondering if you have a set up procedure that you'd recommend for getting DynLevel and DynTime set properly. It has certainly been stressed many times just how important these parameters are (along with HighLevel) so I want to make sure to get them right.

I don't think there could be a step-by-step guide for this - different pad types/combinations/goals/other settings(Threshold, Retrigger) will dictate different approaches. And it is still most likely you won't get perfect (true acoustic) results. As a simplified approach I can suggest this.

1. Make sure Threshold is reasonable. Setting it too low may make it impossible to get rid of double triggering.
2. Set Rettriger to ~2-4.
3. Start with medium DynLevel and minimum DynTime.
4. Increase DynTime until you fill you got rid of most of double triggering.
5. If you still get double triggering, set DynTime back to minimum and increase DynLevel by one. Repeat step 3.
6. If you can't make fast rolls, set DynTime back to minimum and decrease DynLevel by one. Repeat step 3.

Mesh type pads will require more fine tuning because of the slow decaying wave form. Badly made mesh pads may make it impossible to get rid of double triggering and achieve fast rolls.
Rubber type pads usually work fine without much fine tuning with low DynTime/DynLevel values.

Too "hot" pads or incorrectly set HighLevel will make it harder to fine tune DynTime/DynLevel.

It may(will?) take time to fine tune.

Thanks Dmitri, I appreciate it. I definitely understand that the settings are going to vary from one pad to another depending on many other factors, but this at least gives me a starting point.

Wow, this would be helpful info in the documentation...
