Which cymbals to use (A stupid question about hihat pedal)

Postby janif » Mon Jun 21, 2010 6:02 am

Hi.

I think I got my little modified Bespeco VM14 volume pedal working as a hihat pedal. I had to add a 22k resistor in series with the pot (90k), otherwise I got false kick events when pedal was full down.

The actual question: Am I right that the bar on the display is "full" when pedal and hat are up and "empty" when they are down?

Yes that's correct.

I steal your thread because I, too, have a stupid question.

So, I have a hi-hat made with a single piezo, connected to "tip" and "sleeve". Piezo taped under a (soft) plastic hi-hat.

The pedal is a Hall sensor, which seems to work fine according to the LCD display's VU meter. That is, it opens and closes correctly - the bar goes from 100% to 0% to 100% in linear fashion.

BUT... when I play the hi-hat, I get 99% chick notes, and pedal position doesn't matter at all. I check the same chick notes if the pedal is down or up (hi-hat open or closed). Sometimes, very randomly, I get an "open hi-hat sound".

Granted, I haven't read the manual completely yet, I was just doing that, but I thought of asking this anyway. Any idea what might be going on here?

Thanks.

Hmm..

Actually changing the HiLevel changed how it worked, although the bar is still the same (100%) ... But it's still not consistent. But definitely better.

I guess I will have to just do more tuning for now.

Which cymbals to use

Postby janif » Tue Oct 19, 2010 5:14 am

I've been slow building my kit, but now I'm trying to figure out which cymbals to use.

What do you think of these:
Hihat: Yamaha PCY-65
Ride: Yamaha PCY-135 (or is bigger better PCY-155 ?)
Crashes: 2xMillenium MPS-400
Splash and china: 2xMillenium MPS-200/300

Thanks in advance.
