First time plug in to USB PIC18F very hot

Hi,

It's my first time i've plug in my Digital board to usb and the result the PIC18F2550 is very hot.
I've follow the configuration of USB connection already, what is the problem really are?

First thing, make sure you have it in properly (not upside down). Second would be check the board and your soldering for shorts.

Check that the polarity is right - if it's reversed the chip can get very hot.

Do not plug it in again until you've checked the board for defects and made sure you are inserting PIC correctly into its socket. You will be lucky if PIC will work at all after this.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your advice's am able to power up my Digital board now.
There is an hair line short on the board.

Btw Im facing another problem in programming, the Pony programmer does not recognized the atmega.
It showed "Device Missing or Unknown Device (-24).
I've checked the ISP connection and everything is ok.
Did something wrong with my LPT port?

You must power MegaDrum via USB prior to attempt programming ATMega and PIC. Check the settings in PonyProg. Also you might try this: with USB disconnected remove ATMega from the socket, wipe its pins with alcohol and put it back in.

Everything is done as your advice but the programmer still not recognized the Atmega.
I suspect that there is a problem on my LPT port on my PC.
Is there any alternative that i can program the Atmega maybe using RS232?

Check the ISP cable. Check LPT port settings from your BIOS (look through this, it might help).

Hi,

Everything on my PC bios changed, but the problem still exist.
The ISP connection also correct.
Is there any possible way to program my ATMega advice please.

If everything is ok and correct and you still not able to program Atmega, find someone local with a real AVR programmer (JTAG ICE, STK500 and etc) and ask to program your Atmega. Be aware that when you plug your programmed Atmega back into your board and the board has any electrical problems, it will likely fail to wor properly.

P.S. I have a standard PC with a standard LPT port and programming always works fine just as I described in http://www.megadrum.info/content/programming-mcus
